Motherwell College, New Campus
Motherwell
DESCRIPTION:
A new College Campus on the former Ravenscraig site in Motherwell comprises a five storey teaching and learning building that breaks out into a four storey glazed atrium, a 50 bed seven storey student residence, a workshop and pre-school nursery.
INVOLVEMENT:
Civil and structural design including underground drainage. The structural frames for the various buildings included steelwork for the main buildings, reinforced concrete for the residence and timber for the nursery.
CHALLENGES:
The design had to be coordinated with the Ravenscraig development team who provided the offsite infrastructure for the college to connect to. Timescales for the offsite works were tight in relation to the completion date for the college. However, both teams worked together to achieve college delivery.
BENEFITS TO CLIENT:
The completed campus now provides a facility that makes learning accessible to the 20,000 students, which is a great improvement to further education in the Motherwell area. This project is one of the best examples of value for money for an educational facility. This has been due to innovative use of materials and its location on a regenerated site.
