Clydebank College, New Campus
Forth Valley
DESCRIPTION:
New three/four storey College Campus, including lecture rooms, offices, workshops, cafeteria, gymnasia and external roads/car parking.
INVOLVEMENT:
Civil and structural design including underground drainage. The structural form is a braced steel frame with composite concrete floor on downstand beams supported on precast driven piled foundations.
CHALLENGES:
The roof overhang feature involved complex structural design where a heavy steel cantilever structure was introduced to achieve the desired effect. Whilst steel members had to be heavy the thickness of the feature had to be minimised as much as possible.
In addition, the college was built on the old infilled shipyard dock. A combination of foundation types were adopted to suit the variable ground conditions.
BENEFITS TO CLIENT:
A previously derelict area has been transformed into a vibrant new college facility offering a wide variety of subjects for the local community.
