Argyle Street
Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:
A new six storey mixed use building comprising retail on the ground floor and five storeys of accommodation for seventy five students for the neighbouring Glasgow University. On each residential level there is accommodation for fifteen students with communal kitchen and lounge areas per group of five students. The majority of the cladding is stone to reflect the construction of the adjacent tenement buildings.
INVOLVEMENT:
The structural form comprises a steel framed braced building with a precast concrete floor and insitu concrete topping.
CHALLENGES:
To mitigate any possibility of damage to the adjacent tenement building the foundation solution involved using cased steel mini piles with the speed carefully controlled through the sands to the rock below. During the piling process continuous vibration monitoring was used to ensure that the set limits were not exceeded.
