NEW HEAD QUARTERS FOR SCOTTISH BALLET
GLASGOW
DESCRIPTION:
This mixed use building features three full size dance studios, a technical workshop, wardrobe facilities, offices and meeting rooms with reception area and social spaces. In addition to the new main building, direct connection to the main Tramway complex was also a major factor in making the Scottish Ballet facility integrate with the Tramway and its large public spaces. This was achieved by creating additional office space within the Tramway, a reception corridor and an extension to the existing Tramway café.
INVOLVEMENT:
Design and detailing of the reinforced concrete substructure, steel superstructure, precast concrete floors and underground drainage systems. As the dance floors were on suspended floors they were designed to ensure the performance of the structural floor met with the requirements of BS 6399 Part 1
CHALLENGES:
The proximity of the railway, adjacent church and the condition of the Tramway walls were recognised as key issues for the substructure construction and to this end vibration monitoring was undertaken throughout the piling operation.
BENEFITS TO CLIENT:
A purpose-built headquarters building for Scottish Ballet constructed on a derelict part of the old Tramway complex in Glasgow, creating a production and presentation facility of a scale and artistic mix unrivalled in the UK.
