SPIRIT AEROSYSTEMS CHANGES TO PRODUCTION FACILITIES

DESCRIPTION:
The project involved the strip out of a ground floor slab within an existing aircraft hanger and the creation of a new production floor with plant bases and foundations for bespoke equipment.
INVOLVEMENT:
The design involved analysis of foundations, slabs and piled support structures to provide onerous settlement and deflection criteria for automated production equipment. The project also benefitted from a mulitbay extension to the existing facility with associated delivery bays and overhead crane facilities.
CHALLENGES:
The main challenge of the project varied from understanding the various and exacting needs for the hi-tech bespoke equipment to implementing the foundation bases, slabs and structures to suit the very onerous settlement and deflection criteria required for the equipment. Given the nature of the work involved, the requirements were derived through several development sessions with the client’s equipment manufacturer based in the United States before providing the client with a range of structural solutions.
