The Saltire Centre, Glasgow Caledonian University
Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:
A new five storey learning centre in the University Campus including reference areas, reading areas, offices and lecture rooms. This also included works to the existing buildings in order to form links between buildings at various levels.
INVOLVEMENT:
Civil and structural design including underground drainage. The structural form is a mixture of concrete frame construction comprising waffle and flat slab and steel framed construction with composite floor slabs. The building also features a steel framed tower, high level link bridges and glulam timber columns.
CHALLENGES:
The new design had to be compatible and integral with the adjacent structures. On site surveying of existing steel levels had to be carved out to ensure a seamless transition between the new and existing structures. Archive information would not have provided accurate information. “As built” surveys had to be used as the basis for design.
BENEFITS TO CLIENT:
The University was recently upgraded from a Technical College and therefore this new facility justifies the upgrade through greatly improved teaching facilities.
